Was Judas the Catalyst for the Crucifiction?

This type of thinking has even led to some false teaching where Judas is proclaimed as the true savior of the world - ouch. In some of the reformed circles it’s brushed off as insignificant because he was never chosen to be saved in the first place – double ouch. Because God is not like us and His ways are not our ways (Isaiah 55:7-9), we have to be careful when we try to explain God or understand His methods. It’s simply too easy to rest upon my fleshly mind and make God perform as I think would perform. (Assuming Judas was ‘force by God to sin’ is one of these traps.) Without heavy dependency upon the Holy Spirit, the best I can do is know facts about Him, yet not know Him:

“However, as it is written:
‘No eye has seen,
no ear has heard,
no mind has conceived
what God has prepared for those who love Him’

— but God has revealed it to us by His Spirit.

The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God. For who among men knows the thoughts of a man except the man's spirit within him? In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. We have not received the spirit of the world but the Spirit who is from God, that we may understand what God has freely given us. This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom but in words taught by the Spirit, expressing spiritual truths in spiritual words.” 1 Corinthians 2:9-13 (cf. John 16:7-15)

Because God is God, He has many abilities we simply can’t relate to. Among them is foreknowledge, the ability to be aware of people or things before they physically exist or their events occur in time. We can apprehend with a partial understanding, but we can never comprehend and completely understand God and His ways. Therefore, in foreknowledge, God knows Judas will sin and betray His Son as merely one element in Jesus’ path to the cross. God even spoke to prophets to testify to this horrible event many years in advance (Zechariah 11:12-13).
