Irritating the Sunday School Teacher

I must have been about 10 years old. I remember irritating the Sunday School teacher when I asked why we don't obey the 4th command anymore, and she told me that it was "because Jesus was raised on a Sunday morning, so now we worship on Sunday."

That doesn't wash anymore with me because Jesus was not raised on Sunday as she said, and because the 4th command is not about a day that man should worship.

For starters, Jesus was raised on Saturday evening. We know that Mary showed up at the tomb before daybreak on Sunday and did not find anyone there, so He could not have been raised that morning ... besides He said He would be in the earth like Jonah - three days and three nights. The only way to be anywhere for three days and three nights is to get there about the same time of day that you leave there. IOW, Jesus was laid in the tomb Wednesday evening after a long day of suffering, and spent Wednesday night, Thursday night and Friday night in the tomb ... 3 nights. He also spent Thursday day, Friday day and Saturday day in the tomb - 3 days ... three days and three nights ... just as He specified He would.

The second reason has to do with the command is not for us to have a day of worship on a particular day of the week ... and I know that irks any Seventh Day Adventists out there, but read the command for yourself and there is nothing to do with worship ... the forth command is for a day of rest ... laying aside the burden of concern and effort in the world of commerce as a way to provide for yourself or your family. Thus, I don't follow the faiths of Christian denominations that observe the Sabbath by worship ... for that is not what the command is about. (not that it is necessarily wrong to worship that day ... for we can worship any day of the week.)

I tried the Sabbath rest as an experiment and love it. I think you would love it too and wonder what you ever did without it. It really is a blessing. You will see, if you don't already.

Trent, good summary. The point about worship is one a lot of people overlook, causing them to say, "But I worship on Sunday!"

We forget, as you mention, the commandment is to rest. That's all. And Messiah said the sabbath rest is for us, for humanity. We need a day of total rest.

It is so simple and meant for a blessing to all:

GOD SAYS, "work all you like for six days; but HONOR ME and REST IN ME on the seventh."

Just do it. He had many good reasons to offer us this blessing and gift.

I've never found Sunday to be very restful.

I recognized the wisdom of having a day to rest many years ago. I usually can't take the same day every week, but I don't think that's what God really intends. I think the idea is to take a break from laboring to enjoy the creation and strengthen relationship. Fishing with my kids or going to the shore is my favorite rest.

Hey Dorsey,
You have found a secret of a day without concerns and a weekly break. I wish I found this earlier in life.
I tend to agree that it isn't so much the precise day of the week.
Attitude is the key.
Haven't we found that attitude is greater than what we do?
