Jewel #1 – You Are Reconciled to God

“For if, when we were God's enemies, we were reconciled to Him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life! Not only is this so, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.”
Romans 5:10-11

Reconciliation occurs when two parties in deep conflict, set aside what is causing so much friction to make peace with each other. In the ancient world reconciliation was often a public issue. If two people disputed ownership of a piece of land and could not or would not settle the dispute, a judge would take away the right to the land from both people. Since the reason for the dispute, the property, was taken away, there no reason for the conflict to continue.

What offended God and separated humanity from Him was sin. Until the cross, humanity was God’s enemy. When the blood of Christ took away sins (John 1:29; Hebrews 10:11-12), people were no longer God’s enemies because all of their sins were taken away at the cross. Today, right now, all humanity is at peace with God over the sin issue. The only issue remaining is for humanity to escape the wages of sin issue – death – by receiving Christ’s life by faith.
