Beneath His Wings

Life in this world is a turbulent life. To survive it seems, we must either gain control and achieve stability or be overcome by the inherent instability of life in a sin torn and dangerous world. There are those who by their might and by their cunning caste a shadow of fear before them and by the power of that fear gain mastery for a season. Material wealth and power are their reward and their reward is now but it is short lived.

There is a better way, a lasting way, for stability, for security. It is not the way of the cunning or of the mighty. It is for the lowly of heart, the meek of the earth, by whom God will confound the mighty. Through them God warns the cunning and the mighty to turn from their ways and instead turn to the One, God's very own Son, Who came to earth as the humblest of them all:

Psalm 2:7-12 I will proclaim the decree of the LORD:

He said to me, "You are my Son; today I have become your Father. Ask of me, and I will make the nations your inheritance, the ends of the earth your possession. You will rule them with an iron scepter; you will dash them to pieces like pottery.

Therefore, you kings, be wise; be warned you rulers of the earth. Serve the LORD with fear and rejoice with trembling. Kiss the Son, lest he be angry and you be destroyed in your way, for his wrath can flare up in a moment.Blessed are all who take refuge in him.

In Jesus, we are safe even in the midst of violence. In Jesus, we are hidden safely beneath the shadow of the Father's wings. For those who take refuge in the LORD, in the Way that is Jesus and not in the way of cunning and might, there is safety. Though violent and power hungry men come against us, they may destroy our bodies but in Jesus our lives are hidden. For those of us who have kissed the Son and thereby, made peace with God, physical death cannot destroy and the reward that is not ours in this world will fade completely from our memory when we receive the award waiting for us in the world yet to come. The Holy Spirit that fills our hearts is a down payment on that reward. That same Spirit that now fills our hearts with joy that the sorrows brought by the evil one of this earth not overcome us.

Psalm 17:6-12 I call on you, O God, for you will answer me; give ear to me and hear my prayer. Show the wonder of your great love, you will save by your right hand those who take refuge in you from their foes. Keep me as the apple of your eye; hide me in the shadow of your wings from the wicked who assail me, from my mortal enemies who surround me.

The return of the Lord is imminent. It was imminent in the time of Paul and it is still imminent now. He will come as a thief, at a time we do not know, at a time known only to the Father and appointed by Him. God's wrath could flare against the wicked at any moment but for those of us who are in Jesus, who have kissed the Son, there is sure refuge. Do not live in fear of the wrath that is coming but abide in Jesus, in the joy that fills your heart that the Spirit preserve your spirit from bitterness. For the Spirit is also Love, the very person of God. Rejoice with trembling for His wrath will come against all evil as He rescues His children and places all His enemies beneath the feet of His Son. Then Jesus, our refuge and the ruler of our hearts, will rule the world.

Psalm 18:1-19 I love you, O LORD, my strength. The LORD is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge. He is my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold. I call to the LORD, who is worthy of praise, and I am saved from my enemies. The cords of death entangled me; the torrents of destruction overwhelmed me. The cords of the grave coiled around me; the snares of death confronted me. In my distress I called to the LORD; I cried to my God for help. From his temple he heard my voice; my cry came before him, into his ear. The earth trembled and quaked, and the foundations of the mountains shook; they trembled because he was angry. Smoke rose from his nostrils; consuming fire came from his mouth, burning coals blazed out of it. He parted the heavens and came down; dark clouds were under his feet. He mounted the cherubim and flew; he soared on the wings of the wind. He made darkness his covering, his canopy around him--the dark rain clouds of the sky. Out of the brightness of his presence clouds advanced, with hailstones and bolts of lightning. The LORD thundered from heaven; the voice of the Most High resounded. He shot his arrows and scattered the enemies, great bolts of lightning and routed them. The valleys of the sea were exposed and the foundations of the earth laid bare at your rebuke, O LORD, at the blast of breath from your nostrils. He reached down from on high and took hold of me; he drew me out of deep waters. He rescued me from my powerful enemy, from my foes, who were too strong for me. They confronted me in the day of my disaster, but the LORD was my support. He brought me out into a spacious place; he rescued me because he delighted in me.

Child of God, have you gazed upon the world too long, filling your heart with its darkness? Turn your face instead toward Jesus. Be filled with the Spirit anew. Watch as the darkness turns to light and life bubbles up within you as a stream that never runs dry. Be aware of His presence and know you are safe at the right hand of God, in Jesus, the only sure refuge.

To you wondering one, who has come to the end of your own cunning and might. Though the darkness that surrounds you also fills you and even comes from you, it is not too late. Kiss the Son. Come to Jesus and make your peace with God. Take refuge before the time appointed, held back only by God's own Mercy and Long-suffering toward you, comes and God's wrath comes against all who raise themselves up in His place, against all evil. Hide yourself in Jesus before it is too late!
