I don’t believe we should look at Judas as a catalyst, but one of the many ingredients which lead up to the cross. Don’t forget, if Pilate had not been so ‘politically correct’, the cross could never have happened, either. Jesus is the real catalyst; He precipitated all of the events before His birth as men chose to respond to God’s promise of a Messiah (Isaiah 52:13-53:12). After His birth, Jesus drew the wrath of men as He fulfilled His Father’s will (John 6:28-29) by living His life in perfect love (Matthew 22:36-40).

I believe Judas’ part and all of the events leading to the cross fall into the category of the how God’s love and grace has worked across the ages to bring all of mankind to the cross. Once they accept the cross, then they’re ready for the resurrection and eternal life by heeding the call of the Holy Spirit and believe in their need of a Savior, that there is only one Savior and that His name is Jesus Christ (John 16:7-11).

Considering Judas’ salvation, let me ask you a simple question. Was Judas under the Old Covenant, which God had established with Moses, or was he under the New Covenant which began with Jesus’ resurrection? Since Judas died before Jesus rose from the dead, I consider his salvation to be under the Old Covenant just as Moses, David, etc. were saved. So, his salvation was just like every Jew in the Old Testamen., He was saved not by trusting in the blood of bulls and goats, but in the promise of God to Abraham for an heir (Genesis 15:1-6) – this heir was not only Isaac, but included Jesus, the singular promised seed (Romans Ch 4 & 5).
