Can you change what you are, by what you do?

Here is what I mean when I say "legalistic": "You can change what you are by what you do."

That statement is the premise of every religion and every bondage. It is exactly that statement that grace will undo.

Every GraceHead is guided by the principle that we cannot change what we are, no matter what we do. We can only be willing for Jesus to EXchange with us, and that is exactly what He does. He imparts His life to us, and deposits all the divine attributes within us. And by the Grace of this gift of Life - what is true about God becomes true about us.

Paul was not careless to say "Christ, who is your life."

Saints, Christ is our life!

What freedom there is to know that who I am is not based on anything that I do! My identity is based purely on what was done by Another.

Amen...

However, what we do reflects Christ(our new 'identity') in us or lack thereof.
After all, Christian, means 'Christ-like' doesn't it? And I see only one way to be like Him...Him in us.

Trent, some may ask: "What proof do we have that what you said (by the Spirit) is indeed true?"

Here is a verse or 2 regarding your assertion and the outward proof of the inner state:

INWARD PROOF:
John 17:10 And all Mine are Yours, and Yours are Mine, and I am glorified in them...21 that they all may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me. 22 And the glory which You gave Me I have given them, that they may be one just as We are one: 23 I in them, and You in Me; that they may be made perfect in one, and that the world may know that You have sent Me, and have loved them as You have loved Me.

MORE PROOF:
Eph 2:8 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God,

John 14:6 Jesus said to him, "I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life.

John 6:63 ...human power is of no use at all.

OUTWARD PROOF of the new INWARD identity:
Jas 2:22 Do you see that faith was working together with his works, and by works faith was made perfect?

Jas 2:26 For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.

Mt 7:20 Therefore by their *fruits you will know them.

[*Gal 5:22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, meekness, self-control. Against such there is no law. 24 And those who are Christ's have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. 26 Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another.]

Final outward PROOF:
Re 12:17 ...who keep the commandments of God and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.

Re 14:12 Here is the patience of the saints; here are those who keep the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus.

Blessings in The Beloved.

Amen, Tim.

What we do reveals what we are. And if, indeed, what we are has been changed by the Lord Jesus ... then what we do will be equally changed initially and over-time ... the change "has come and builds" outwardly in accordance with His limitless grace.

We are told by Paul to "put on Christ" .. because when we do it reveals what we have been made.

A woman that is wearing baby clothes should be told by someone to take those off and put on lady clothes. And in doing so, she does not change what she is ... but she will feel a relief and freedom in wearing on the outside a consistency with what she already is on the inside.

Great points, and I am glad you contributed them ... just what this post needed.

Ripening,
Trent

It is also a releif when we find ourselves doing new things that reflect our changed state. We are growing into Jesus Christ.
