God has created human beings to be inquisitive. He has given us a thirst for knowing for it pleases Him to do so. God enjoys our childish questioning as He is refreshed by the innocence in them. He is most pleased when we direct our questions toward Him for He delights in imparting Himself to us. For this we were created, to have communion with God. God as all good parents, desires only to enjoy the company of His children; to delight in their questioning wonder and rejoice in the moment of their sudden understanding as through Truth a portion of Himself has been planted in them through their trust in the surety of His answer. This form of questioning is the process by which we gain Wisdom.
There is another form of questioning that is employed by the skillful teacher. It is a question that does not seek an answer but helps the pupil to form the answer for himself. This form of questioning develops critical thinking. It is the form of questioning that Jesus used when He taught the disciples, the masses, and confronted the religious leaders of His day. This form of questioning is also pleasing to the Father for He is Creative and he has made us to be creative also. He is pleased when our creativity is employed as a force for good in the world, when our inborn creativity is surrendered to Him and in communion with Him we receive the rote answers that securely underpin that which we create and lay upon that foundation of Wisdom. Without that underpinning, our critical reasoning empowered by the knowledge of good and evil becomes only, creatively evil. It is impossible to perform the works of God apart from God.
There is a third kind of questioning that sounds like this: "Did God really say, "You must not eat from any tree in the garden'?" Gen.3:1b This question is of the type that engenders critical thought but it is twisted into the form of manipulation by its self-serving intent. It ever so lightly sways the hearer to begin to chip at the underpinnings of God's Wisdom. This is also the type of question that the religious rulers of the day used upon Jesus as they tried to trip Him in His words and make Him fall. Just as Satan was able to successfully remove the underpinnings of God's Wisdom from beneath Eve through the deception of her own desire and caused her to sin and fall. Satan as he spoke through those Pharisees could not be successful in causing Jesus to fall for the desires of Jesus were and are the very same desires as those of God. In Jesus, our desires are changed and the underpinnings of God's Wisdom become our sure foundation with Jesus the Cornerstone.
Today this is my question for all who enter here. Are your feet sure upon that sure foundation, that is Jesus alone? If you stood upon the shoreline of some vast body of water and suddenly, Jesus appeared at the horizon, standing upon the water with His arms open wide and if He called to you, would you recognize His voice? Would you fix your eyes on Him and walk out to Him at His beckoning? Or would you be uncomfortable and walk away. Preferring to relegate the Miraculous Power of the Living God to an old book under thousands of years of dust as a story that was true then but only has spiritual relevance now? To you, oh wayward one, independent one who prides himself in walking in your own way. Have you been confronted by God's Holy Law? Do you see by it your condition, locked away under condemnation and under the curse of God? Do you see? You are but a dead man walking, alive but dead to God. Will you turn to Jesus? The One Who's blood has covered your sin and washed away the curse if you but look to Him as the Son of the Living God, the Saviour of all who call on Him. The Saviour of your own soul. Look to Him, receive Him and receive Life. Then go and sin no more as you walk in His forgiveness and daily, your sins are washed away by the renewing of His Word.
Oh child of God and sinner alike, turn to Jesus. Know Him as He is, experience the Power of God in Him. Cease in listening to questions that chip away at the Wisdom of God and tempt you through wrong desire. Cease at asking such questions. Accept no counterfeit, in yourself or in another. Cease to walk as the dead toward final destruction. Heed God's Word, heed His warning, accept Truth, accept Jesus, receive Life, and walk in the newness of that Life.
