What is the inheritance of the believer?

inheritanceThose that are born by the Spirit have a special inheritance. They inherit the Holy Spirit and thus the divine attributes that are true of God's own Spirit become their own reality.

Look at it this way, a branch is grafted to a vine that is sick ... wouldn't it be safe to assume that the branch that is grafted to a sick vine would inherit the vine's sickness? Or take a branch and graft it to a healthy vine. Wouldn't such a grafting let the branch inherit the vine's health? What is true of the vine BECOMES true for the branch.

So, as branches that are grafted into the Vine that is the Lord Jesus, we inherit His divine attributes. What is true for the Lord Jesus becomes true for His branches that abide in Him.

Is the Lord Jesus holy? Well, is He? Then are you holy, when you are grafted into Him, and receive His life? Is it careless to call you holy, or careless to call you unholy?

Hebrews 10:10
"And by that will, we have been made HOLY through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all."

Is the Lord Jesus righteous? Well ... is He? Then are you righteous, when you receive His life?

Romans 3:22 "... RIGHTEOUSNESS from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe."

Is the Lord Jesus perfect? Either He is perfect or He isn't perfect ... so provided that He is perfect and His life was afforded to you, what could you INHERIT from Him?

Hebrews 10:14
because by one sacrifice he has made PERFECT forever those who are being made holy.

... and the list can go on and on.

The description of a Christian and what they have inherited from the Lord is the description of the Lord in his fullness.
Look at Colossians 2:9 and 10, this will sum up the point. Speaking of Christ verse 9 says, "For in Him dwelleth all the fullness of the godhead bodily." within Christ is the complete fullness of God, right? All of God is in Christ. But the kicker is in verse 10, "And ye are complete in Him."

All of God is in Christ and all of Christ is in you. Great inheritance! We inherit His divinity!

2 Peter 1:4
For by these He has granted to us His precious and magnificent promises, so that by them you may become partakers of the DIVINE NATURE, having escaped the corruption that is in the world by lust.

We don't act holy so that we can become holy.
We don't behave righteous so that we can become righteous.
We aren't seeking perfection through acting perfect.

Rather we are simply being whom we have become. We are manifesting what we have inherited through the Holy Spirit ... holiness. We don't do this to change what we are, but to reveal what we are ... what He has made us.

We are as branches that are bearing (not producing) the fruit of the vine.

Trent, I really enjoyed reading this. This piece served to show us how simple our inheritance is to understand. We are simply a part of Who we've been Grafted into. We passed from death to life because of Christ. We are the branches that have been grafted into the Eternal Vine. That simple.

Many times it seems I try to make it harder than what it really is to understand. The Gospel is becoming more clear to me as I learn to lean on the Holy Spirit for understanding. I've memorized scripture for years, got the prize in Sunday School, and then never did anything with the verse. But boy howdy! When the HS decided it was time... the floodgates lifted and His teachings were perfect!

It's not that the Gospel is shallow, by no means--it's very deep. However, it's very clear if look in it with the eyes that our Father has given us.
Thanks for the encouragment, Trent :)
