Scripture

Justification by Faith

O foolish Galatians (could be GraceHeads)! Who has bewitched you that you should not obey the truth, before whose eyes Jesus Christ was clearly portrayed among you as crucified? This only I want to learn from you: Did you receive the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith? Are you so foolish? Having begun in the Spirit, are you now being made perfect by the flesh? Gal.2:1-3

The Law Brings A Curse

For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse; for it is written, "Cursed is everyone who does not continue in all things which are written in the book of the law, to do them. But no one is justified by the law in the sight of God is evident for "the just shall live by faith" Yet the law is not of faith, but "the man who does them shall live by them." Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us( for it is written, "Cursed is everyone who hangs from a tree") that the blessing of Abraham might come upon the Gentiles in Christ Jesus, that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.Gal. 3:10-14

The Changeless Promise

Brethren, I speak in the manner of men: Though it is only a man's covenant, yet it is confirmed, no on annuls or adds to it. Now to Abraham and his Seed were the promises made. He does not say, "And to seeds," as of many, but as of one, "And to you Seed," who is Christ. And this I say, that the law, which was four hundred and thirty years later, cannot annul the covenant that was confirmed before by God in Christ, that it should make the promise of no effect. For if the inheritance is of the law, it is no longer of promise; but God gave it to Abraham by promise. Gal.3:15-17

Purpose of the Law

What purpose then does the law serve? It was added because of transgressions, till the Seed should come to whom the promise was made, and it was appointed through angels by the hand of a mediator. Now a mediator does not mediate for one only, but God is one. Is the law then against the promises of God? Certainly not! For if there had been a law given which could have given life, truly righteousness would have been by the law. But the Scriptures has confined all under sin, that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe. But before faith came, we were kept under guard by the law, kept for the faith which would afterward be revealed. Therefore the law was our tutor to bring us to Christ, that we might be justified by faith. But after faith has come, we are no longer under a tutor. Gal.3:19-25

Encouraging. And timely, too, I feel. Thank you Pam.

I remember going to a church service where a much-feted visiting 'Messianic Jew' was to give the 'message'. The topic was respecting and valuing the old Jewish symbols - he spoke particularly of the tasseled shawl with ?613 knots or tassels - the number of 'laws' Jews are required to keep (presumably from the OT?) - he started to say he thought this was fantastic as whenever he bent over and saw the tassels, it reminded him of...

At this point, I was quite excited - I thought he was, as a Messianic Jew, going to preach a message of grace and finish this statement by saying that the 613 tassels reminded him of "...the fact that Jesus died for his sins and now lives in Him, enabling him to come out from the curse of trying to keep the 613 laws in his own strength, and to 'simply' surrender himself to Christ", etc. Indeed, I thought he might go on to speak of his sadness that non-Messianic Jewish friends still toiled under the law. What a great Christ-message that would have been!

How sad to have to report that instead he finished by saying that the 613 tassels were a great reminder of the need to keep the 613 laws, and were a real help in enabling him to do so. I was disappointed, shocked, even a little angry at the distortion of the message of the New Covenant. But not as shocked as I was at the fact that no-one else in the service seemed to think there was any problem with that message at all - and the 'Pastor' thanked him for his wonderful message!

There is no doubt that my Jesus-picture is warped and distorted by my human-ness -"we see things imperfectly as in a cloudy mirror" - but I thank the Lord that He has revealed to my heart the 'mystery of the ages' that is 'Christ in me', allowing me to really live the 'no condemnation' life, rather than toil and strain under the curse of trying to match up, as I did for so many years.

Hi Kevin,

Thank you for your comment. I so needed to hear it today.:0)

I too am thankful to know that Jesus has fulfilled all of the Law and I am kept by Him. It is easy to be confused, especially when we are young in the Lord, by those who want to add things to Christ. When it is Biblical Law, it can be even more confusing and deceptive. The insidiousness of legalism is that it sounds and looks so right. It is not a long way from the truth but just a hair width off. Legalism adds just a twist and soon those who have been made free are in bondage once again.

I've been there and done that and I pray God keeps me from going that way again.
