Fairy Tales

2 Timothy 2:3-4 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables

Christians today are presented a smorgasbord of Christian teachings from which at least one, is sure to please. No matter the bent of our nature there is a Christian teaching to suit us as we seek God in our own image. If there is no group within our community that gives us the acceptance we desire or the form of teaching that pleases us, we can always turn to the Internet. On the Internet, every believer becomes a preacher and though I think it is good for believers to articulate their faith, each of us who share our faith online add to the cacophony of doctrines that are present today. Amid all of these voices, there is sure to be one that suits us and makes us comfortable, at least for a time; then as we are offended or we grow bored and our ears begin to itch again, we are off on the hunt to find God packaged in a manner that soothes our hurt and suits our new found need. Sadly, none of these teachings has the power to satisfy and stop that annoying itch.

John 6:39-40 "You search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life; and these are they which testify of Me. But you are not willing to come to Me that you might have life.

There is no life in any form of Christian teaching, no matter how Biblical. There is no Biblical truth that can remain true unless the hearer is held by Truth. Without the living Jesus at it's core, any teaching, no matter how Biblical becomes merely a fairytale. It is possible to hear many teachings that hold the cross or the gospel at their center but the cross and the gospel also become only stories when stripped of the living Jesus. The Bible is about Jesus and without He who is Truth the truths presented by scripture lose their quality of truth.

John 5: 46-47 "For if you believed Moses, you would believe Me; for he wrote about Me. But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe My words?"

The Law of Moses is dead without Jesus. It is Jesus, the Living Word that breathes the Life that is Spirit into the Law. When that Law, like all scripture, is stripped of the Life that is Jesus, it is dead and useless. Dead truth doesn't have the power to stop the maddening itch; only the living Jesus and a living relationship with Him can satisfy our desire for what is true with the Truth that is Jesus, Himself.

John 5:25 "Most assuredly, I say to you, the hour is coming, and now is, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God; and those who hear will live.

I hear many voices amid all of the teachings today, but I hear the voice of Jesus in few of them. There are many true teachings that have lost the Truth and have become untrue. Whether they be traditional or modern, they don't contain the Life and they can never satisfy. Only Jesus can satisfy the longing in men and women for truth and acceptance. Only the Living Water that is Jesus can quench that burning thirst.

Don't be deluded into believing fairy tales. Harken instead to the voice of Jesus and live!

This is a very very good page on Law & Grace by a UNIVERSALIST named Mike Vinson.I am not a UNIVERSALIST and am in no way promoting it here but I do feel that to wish Gods wrath on "ANYONE" is to ultimatly wish it upon ourselves. The 2ND page is on LAW & Grace by Bob George and it is also excellent.

I read your piece about "dead truths" with interest, Pam. I wonder whether you have experienced hostility from Christians about this? I have been surprised (naively, probably) by the response from Christians when I suggest that the merely physical words on the pages of the Bible are not, in themselves,"Absolute Truth" to be taken as rules for all occasions. I think people worry that I am trying to justify immoral behaviour or woolly thinking. The way I see it, we all need the illuminating presence of the living Christ within us if we are to receive the scriptures as God intends for us. Otherwise, we will be stuck with trying to apply yet more legalistic rules - "All women should cover their heads and remain silent in church" - etc. And that is exactly what Christ came to free us from.

But I can sympathise with the anxiety of many christians who just want to know they are "safe" and "doing the right thing" by applying the Bible in an absolutist fashion. They find my attitude frightening and me very dangerous!

I just wondered whether you had experienced this sort of thing?

Hi Hillary,

I have experienced opposition and confusion but as of yet, little hostility, though there haven't been the usual number of responses to this post...

It seems that we Christians tend to speak of the dead Jesus much more often than the Living Jesus but if Jesus does not live, then the Bible is just another holy book. If Jesus does not live in us, then the words on the pages of the Bible can only be applied in religious fashion. When we remove the Living Jesus, we remove the heart of the Christian faith.

People do want to feel safe in believing what their peers believe and they do so to the point of worshiping the Bible. I love the Bible and I am often awed by the miracle of being able to hold God's Word in my hands but my worship belongs to Jesus and to the Father through Him.

It is a small shift in thinking but one with huge impact!

Anyway, keep preaching Jesus despite the opposition. He is the only Way!

Hi Steve,

The center of the Bible is Jesus and the Life that He imparts to those who believe in Him. Without Him, the Bible has no meaning and its true meaning can't be fully understood. The Bible says of itself that it is spiritually discerned. It is the Spirit that enlivens scripture to become the very words of life. Rules can be helpful guides in life but they fall short of the guidance of the Spirit for rules fail to adapt to our ever changing environment. Christ functions in every culture but the rules that are set down in the Christian religion become archaic and will pass from the earth just as every religion passes when it loses its usefulness.

Yes, religion can control human beings somewhat and civilise them but only Jesus can give us Life and free us from the rule of religion;not to do evil but to free us from sin by changing our desire for sin. What was fun before Jesus loses its appeal in comparison to His glory.

I will give you the strength to shove and push all demons from your safe place which surrounds your family. In the few short days (years) to come, I will make your husband great so no one of evil may stand against him, for I will put My Word in his mouth.
