2 Timothy 2:3-4 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables
Christians today are presented a smorgasbord of Christian teachings from which at least one, is sure to please. No matter the bent of our nature there is a Christian teaching to suit us as we seek God in our own image. If there is no group within our community that gives us the acceptance we desire or the form of teaching that pleases us, we can always turn to the Internet. On the Internet, every believer becomes a preacher and though I think it is good for believers to articulate their faith, each of us who share our faith online add to the cacophony of doctrines that are present today. Amid all of these voices, there is sure to be one that suits us and makes us comfortable, at least for a time; then as we are offended or we grow bored and our ears begin to itch again, we are off on the hunt to find God packaged in a manner that soothes our hurt and suits our new found need. Sadly, none of these teachings has the power to satisfy and stop that annoying itch.
John 6:39-40 "You search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life; and these are they which testify of Me. But you are not willing to come to Me that you might have life.
There is no life in any form of Christian teaching, no matter how Biblical. There is no Biblical truth that can remain true unless the hearer is held by Truth. Without the living Jesus at it's core, any teaching, no matter how Biblical becomes merely a fairytale. It is possible to hear many teachings that hold the cross or the gospel at their center but the cross and the gospel also become only stories when stripped of the living Jesus. The Bible is about Jesus and without He who is Truth the truths presented by scripture lose their quality of truth.
John 5: 46-47 "For if you believed Moses, you would believe Me; for he wrote about Me. But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe My words?"
The Law of Moses is dead without Jesus. It is Jesus, the Living Word that breathes the Life that is Spirit into the Law. When that Law, like all scripture, is stripped of the Life that is Jesus, it is dead and useless. Dead truth doesn't have the power to stop the maddening itch; only the living Jesus and a living relationship with Him can satisfy our desire for what is true with the Truth that is Jesus, Himself.
John 5:25 "Most assuredly, I say to you, the hour is coming, and now is, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God; and those who hear will live.
I hear many voices amid all of the teachings today, but I hear the voice of Jesus in few of them. There are many true teachings that have lost the Truth and have become untrue. Whether they be traditional or modern, they don't contain the Life and they can never satisfy. Only Jesus can satisfy the longing in men and women for truth and acceptance. Only the Living Water that is Jesus can quench that burning thirst.
Don't be deluded into believing fairy tales. Harken instead to the voice of Jesus and live!
